Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized branch of PT focused on the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that form the base of your pelvis. These muscles support your bladder, bowel, uterus (in women), and prostate (in men), and play a critical role in core stability, sexual function, and continence.

At Quality Movement PT, Dr. Patel combines hands-on manual therapy, targeted exercise, and education to restore normal pelvic floor function and eliminate pain or dysfunction at its source.

Pelvic floor dysfunction affects people of all genders and ages — not just postpartum women. You may benefit from pelvic floor PT if you experience any of the following:

  • Urinary leakage with coughing, sneezing, or exercise (stress incontinence)
  • Sudden, urgent need to urinate (urge incontinence)
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Pelvic pain or pressure during daily activities
  • Pain during or after intercourse
  • Diastasis recti (abdominal separation after pregnancy)
  • Pregnancy-related pelvic girdle or back pain
  • Postpartum recovery and return-to-exercise
  • Men's health issues including pelvic pain or post-prostate surgery rehab

It is completely normal to feel nervous before your first session — many patients do. Dr. Patel creates a safe, private, and professional environment and takes time to explain every step before proceeding. You are always in full control of your care, and nothing is done without your informed consent.

Most patients feel at ease very quickly and report that the sessions are far more comfortable than they anticipated. Dr. Patel's warm, communicative approach has consistently been highlighted in patient reviews as a key part of the experience.

Your initial evaluation begins with a thorough health history review and an open conversation about your symptoms, goals, and concerns. Dr. Patel will then assess your posture, breathing mechanics, abdominal function, and movement patterns.

An internal pelvic floor assessment may be offered if it is clinically indicated — this is always optional and performed only with your full, voluntary consent. External assessments alone can provide substantial diagnostic information and guide an effective treatment plan.

Most patients see meaningful improvement within 6–12 sessions, though the exact duration depends on your diagnosis, symptom severity, and how consistently you complete your home exercise program. Some patients achieve their goals sooner; others with complex or long-standing conditions may benefit from a longer course of care.

Dr. Patel reassesses your progress at every session and adjusts your plan accordingly — you'll always know where you stand and what's next.

Yes. Quality Movement PT provides Pelvic Health for all Genders. Men commonly seek pelvic floor PT for pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, urgency, or rehabilitation following prostate procedures. Dr. Patel's evidence-based approach is equally effective for men and women.

Specialized Services

Dry needling is a physical therapy technique in which thin monofilament needles are inserted into trigger points — tight, painful knots in muscle tissue — to release tension, reduce pain, and restore normal muscle function.

While acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and energy meridians, dry needling is guided by Western anatomical and neurophysiological principles. It is performed by Dr. Patel (Cert. DN) as part of a comprehensive PT treatment plan — never as a standalone procedure.

This program is designed for expectant and new mothers experiencing pelvic girdle pain, low back pain, diastasis recti, urinary leakage, or preparing for labor and delivery. Dr. Patel is a certified Pregnancy & Postpartum Corrective Exercise Specialist (PCES) and adapts all exercises for safety throughout each trimester and into the fourth trimester.

The program includes birth preparation strategies, postpartum core and pelvic floor rehabilitation, and progressive return-to-exercise guidance so you can confidently get back to the activities you love.

Manual therapy at QMPT encompasses several hands-on techniques tailored to each patient's needs:

  • Joint Mobilization — gentle graded movements to restore joint range of motion
  • Soft Tissue Manipulation — targeted work on muscles, fascia, and connective tissue
  • Cupping Therapy — myofascial decompression to improve circulation and reduce tightness
  • Trigger Point Release — direct pressure techniques to deactivate painful muscle knots

These techniques are always integrated with active exercise and education — the goal is to make you less dependent on hands-on treatment over time, not more.

Yes. Home PT visits are available for patients who are recovering from surgery, have limited mobility, or simply prefer the convenience of receiving care in their own environment. Dr. Patel brings the same clinical standards and individualized attention to every home visit as she does in the clinic.

Telehealth appointments are also available for consultations, exercise instruction, and follow-up sessions.

Orthopedic Rehabilitation

Orthopedic physical therapy addresses injuries and conditions affecting the muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, and nerves throughout the body. Common conditions treated at QMPT include:

  • Neck and back pain (including disc issues, sciatica, and postural pain)
  • Shoulder injuries (rotator cuff, frozen shoulder, impingement)
  • Hip pain (hip flexor tightness, bursitis, labral issues)
  • Knee pain (runner's knee, patellofemoral syndrome, post-surgical rehab)
  • Sports and overuse injuries
  • Post-fracture rehabilitation
  • Stroke recovery and neurological rehabilitation

The McKenzie Method — formally known as Mechanical Diagnosis & Therapy (MDT) — is a research-backed assessment and treatment system developed for spinal and musculoskeletal pain. Dr. Patel holds a Cert. MDT credential, a rigorous certification earned by only a small percentage of PTs worldwide.

MDT goes beyond treating symptoms: it identifies the specific mechanical cause of your pain through a systematic movement assessment, then empowers you with a self-treatment strategy so you can manage and prevent future episodes independently — reducing your long-term reliance on hands-on care.

In many cases, yes. Physical therapy is often recommended as a first-line treatment before pursuing surgical options for conditions like disc herniations, rotator cuff tears, knee degeneration, and more. Research consistently shows that PT outcomes match or exceed surgical outcomes for many common orthopedic conditions.

Dr. Patel works collaboratively with your physician or surgeon to ensure you receive the most appropriate care — and she will always refer you out if surgery or further imaging is genuinely indicated.

Appointments & Insurance

No referral is required for most patients. In New Jersey, patients have direct access to physical therapy — meaning you can schedule your first appointment without a physician's prescription or referral. Simply request an appointment online or call 732-595-2322.

Please note: Medicare does require a physician's PT prescription for Dr. Rupa to see a Medicare beneficiary. If you are a Medicare patient, please obtain a referral or prescription from your physician prior to your first visit.

Quality Movement PT is a cash-based, out-of-network provider for all insurances, with the exception of Medicare, which we accept directly.

For patients with private insurance, we can provide a detailed superbill after each session that you may submit to your insurer for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Dr. Rupa can gladly look into your insurance benefits for out-of-network coverage as well — just ask at the time of scheduling.

What to Expect

At most traditional outpatient PT clinics, therapists manage multiple patients simultaneously, delegating much of the hands-on work to aides or techs. At Quality Movement PT, Dr. Patel works one-on-one with you for the full duration of every session — no divided attention, no generic programs.

Every plan of care is built from a meticulous assessment of your specific diagnosis, goals, and lifestyle. Your progress is tracked at every visit and your plan is updated accordingly.

  • Initial evaluation: 60–75 minutes — includes a full health history review, movement assessment, and first treatment
  • Follow-up sessions: 45–60 minutes — hands-on treatment, exercise progression, and education

Because sessions are always one-on-one, you receive the full scheduled time without interruption or waiting.

Yes. A personalized home exercise program is a core part of your care at QMPT. Dr. Patel delivers your exercises through a convenient mobile app with video demonstrations, rep counts, and notes — so you always know exactly what to do between sessions and can reference it any time.

The program is updated as you progress, and Dr. Patel welcomes questions between visits to ensure you're performing everything correctly and safely.

Quality Movement Physical Therapy & Wellness is located at 1001 Lincoln Blvd, Suite D — Middlesex, NJ 08846.

In-home and telehealth appointments are also available for patients who prefer care outside of the clinic setting.
